Recently the North Carolina Community College System, under direction of Democrat Governor Mike Easley, decided that they were going to give in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. Keep in mind this means that taxpayer cash (not paid by the illegals) will be given to illegal aliens for education. We are literally rewarding them for breaking the law with actual cash. Other US citizens are not given this cash, just illegals. So you if you want to attend college in North Carolina and get discounted rates, just claim you’re breaking the law and you get free cash.
Meanwhile, Fred Smith, who is running for governor of North Carolina, had a few words about this practice:
We are a nation that is sustained under the rule of law. Without these laws, our freedom and order is compromised. Our citizens can’t just pick and choose which laws they will obey. The directive issued by the North Carolina Community College System to mandate all community colleges across our state admit illegal immigrants as students simply ignores our immigration laws. If we ignore these laws, what other laws should we consider as unnecessary to obey?
How can a state government organization take the position that some laws just don’t count? If we disagree with the laws, then we work to get them changed. We don’t simply ignore them. The legislature should act quickly, setting politics aside, and address this important issue. I believe in sharing our freedom and opportunities with those who desire to come to the United States, but I believe those who come should respect our laws and make the effort to come to our country legally. We can’t continue to ignore our laws by providing new incentives to come to North Carolina illegally.
I call upon Governor Easley, Lt. Governor Purdue, and Attorney General Roy Cooper to recognize the importance of this action by the Community College System and the message that is being sent by simply ignoring the federal laws and fact these individuals are in our state illegally. They should take appropriate action including the call of a special session of the General Assembly if necessary to rectify this improper decision.

I hope you have Governer Smith by this time next year and hopefully will be able to stop that insanity! And people wonder why I jumped the “Liberal Nutjob Ship”!!!!
He’s campaigning heavily — but he’s a Republican so it will be very, very difficult for him to win statewide — the Democrats pull out all stops to win that race. And they’re not beyond lying and cheating to win.
I have ya’ll in my prayers… maybe common sense and outrage will prevail on this one. Indiana has traditionally been a Republican state… and we had about 16 years or so of Democrat Governors and then we got a Republican.
Unfortunately, he’s not demonstrated true conservative game play so I don’t have much use for ole Mitch. Hopefully they will run someone who can do a better job in the next election for Governor. When I was growing up, Indiana only managed to get a Democrat governor about 3% of the time… but that has changed since the farming and industrial base has erroded. We just can’t seem to get people with real leadership and common sense to run here.
The system is probably too corrupt to attract that kind of candidate.
We have been ruled by Democrats for over 100 years. Seriously. They used to be conservative Democrats, but no longer.
That is sad. The south has produced some of the strongest patriots in the history of our country and now they have been overwhelmed by the leftest agenda, which is quit insane.
And there’s no sign it will end. Democrats in North Carolina literally select their voters so they simply cannot lose control of the state. Gerrymandering rules North Carolina politics.
The law simply stated that ‘illegal immigrants’ could not be denied access to education and federal aid, just the same as everyone else. It is an extension of a law that was passed (rather challenged) during 1985 (Reagan) stating that public schools could not deny access to public services enjoyed by citizens to any person happen to be living here (legally or non-legally)
Furthermore, all people pay taxes in a manner of ways – sales tax, property tax, income tax. Therefore, if that person has a job, rents, or buys one item, they have ‘contributed’ in some form to the economy.
Just because they are not citizens does not strip them of their humanity and needs that arise out of the frailty we all suffer from.
Besides, a bigger detriment to the economy of the United States would be NAFTA or perhaps the ‘War on Terror’.
Just a thought.
No, this also gave illegals in-state rates — which are taxpayer-paid subsidies. These people are breaking the law and getting rewarded with cash from people who work and earn it. That’s plain wrong.
Joe, I do agree with you on NAFTA being a detriment but the War on Terror is way too complicated an issue to debate. I am with Ogre on illegals, if you are here and by being here disrespecting our laws, our government should not be your benefactor in any way.
I’m evil — but I don’t think illegals should get free schooling, citizenship, or health care, either.

Is Mike Huckabee a light-weight?
What’s not to like about Mike Huckabee? Aside from some differences bet…
Huckabee is a HUGE government fan. He might be a social conservative, but he’s a giant economic liberal. If Huck’s in charge with a Democrat Congress, we’ll see government expand more than even Clinton did.
